GOING HOME! | SectionsMy Recollections Page 100 GOING HOME! Friday, September 14, 1945 With my arm in the sling I can’t do much. Wrote letters to Pearce and Alice. Saturday, September 15, 1945 - no entry - Sunday, September 16, 1945 Am in camp all day. Wrote letters to Mother and Nick. Monday, September 17, 1945 Had a Battalion Muster Parade. Went downtown. Stayed in, in the evening. Wrote a letter to Alice. Tuesday, September 18, 1945 Am well enough to work. Am on fatigue duty in the morning. Pressed some clothes in the afternoon. Went downtown in the evening. No mail today. Wednesday, September 19, 1945 Prepared for a funeral to bury Abigal in Nijmegan in the afternoon. No mail today. Thursday, September 20, 1945 Company drill in the morning. Had a draft inspection in the afternoon. Went downtown. Had a letter from Francis. Friday, September 21, 1945 Am Line Orderly all day. Went downtown to the Canteen. Received a letter from Alice. Saturday, September 22, 1945 We are on drill competition today. Went downtown in the afternoon and evening. Sunday, September 23, 1945 Stayed in camp all day. Pearce came up to see me. No mail. Monday, September 24, 1945 Preparing for repatriation. Went downtown in the evening. No mail today. Tuesday, September 25, 1945 We leave Amerstfoort at 9:00 am for Nijmegan. Arrive there at noon. Remained in Nijmegan all day. Wednesday, September 26, 1945 We are still at transit camp. Had a muster parade. Meals are very poor. Thursday, September 27, 1945 Still at transit camp. Had a pay parade. We move to another camp in Nijmegan. Friday, September 28, 1945 We are in transit camp waiting for orders. Saturday, September 29, 1945 Preparing to move out on the road to Calais. We are on a train all night. Smith cut the toe of my sock off for a prank. He is a prankster! Sunday, September 30, 1945 Arrive in Calais at 6:00 am. Had breakfast at transit camp. Had time to clean up a bit. Boarded a boat at 1:30 pm and arrived in England at 4:00 pm. We are transported to Aldershot Army Barracks. My Recollections Page 101 Monday, October 1, 1945 In Aldershot all day. I received a whole lot of mail. Tuesday, October 2, 1945 At Aldershot busy all day with various procedures. I have a cold. Am getting to go on leave. Received a letter from Alice. Wednesday, October 3, 1945 Am on leave for fourteen days. Traveled to London by train. Arrived at the Victory Station at 10:30 am. Went to visit the Holmes family. Stayed with them. Thursday, October 4, 1945 Went to look over London for a bit. Back at the Holmes. Wrote letters in the evenings. Friday, October 5, 1945 Went to see the sights in London. Visited the London zoo and Madame Tussauds. Visited a Jeweler. Wrote letter to Alice. Saturday, October 6, 1945 Left London for Worthing from the Victoria station at 11:00 am. Stayed with Mr. & Mrs. Walters. Visited Mr. & Mrs. Irland. Sunday, October 7, 1945 In Worthing attended the St. James church in the morning and evening. Visited the Swans. Monday, October 8, 1945 Left Worthing for London by tram. Looked around London. Staying at the Holmes. Wrote a letter to Charles Nethorcott. Tuesday, October 9, 1945 In London all day. Tried to locate the W.E.C. Headquarters. Stayed at the W.M.C.A. Wednesday, October 10, 1945 Met Mr. & Mrs. Holmes and the Walters. Ray is going to Edinburgh Faith Mission School. Thursday, October 11, 1945 Downtown all day. Attended a W.E.C. prayer meeting at the Holmes home. Mr. Finly spoke on power. Friday, October 12, 1945 Went to the zoo in the morning. Various in the afternoon. Went to visit the Holmes. Saturday, October 13, 1945 I am still in London. Staying at the Beaver Club. Learned that the ship Queen Elizabeth is to transport us HOME. Sunday, October 14, 1945 Stayed around the Beaver Club all day. Wrote letters. Monday, October 15, 1945 Walked around London. Tuesday, October 16, 1945 Went to St. Pauls Cathedral in the afternoon. Stayed in at night. Wednesday, October 17, 1945 Returned to Aldershot. Had a roll call. Receive letters from Pearce and Alice. My Recollections Page 102 Thursday, October 18, 1945 In camp all day. Sent a parcel to Pearce. Mailed my Cameron diary home. Wrote letters. Friday, October 19, 1945 Drill in the morning. Going to London on a weekend. Saturday, October 20, 1945 In London stayed at the Queensburough Club. Sunday, October 21, 1945 In London all day. Went back to Aldershot by tram from Victoria Station. Monday, October 22, 1945 On drill in the morning. Various in the afternoon. Received some letters. Tuesday, October 23, 1945 On drill in the morning. Various jobs in the afternoon. Visited a hobby shop in the evening. Wednesday, October 24, 1945 Rained in the morning. Drill in the afternoon. Thursday, October 25, 1945 On clothing parade in the morning. Drill in the afternoon. Friday, October 26, 1945 Had a Battalion inspection by General Drew. Rained most of the day. No mail today. Saturday, October 27, 1945 Preparing for a seven day leave. Arrived in London. Stayed at the Memorial Hall. Art Willwood was there. Sunday, October 28, 1945 Visited Mr. & Mrs. Holmes. Went to the Baptist Church both morning and evening. Monday, October 29, 1945 In London – a very nice day. Stayed at the Holmes. Prepare to leave to Edinburgh tomorrow. Tuesday, October 30, 1945 Left London from the Victoria Station for Scotland in the morning. Was able to get a seat. Arrived in Edinburgh at 7:00 pm. Stayed at the Canadian Legion. Wednesday, October 31, 1945 Rained in the morning. Went to visit Ray Walters at the Faith Mission Bible School in the afternoon. Both of us went to the Edinburgh zoo. Thursday, November 1, 1945 Rained all day. At the Faith Mission School in the afternoon. Stayed for tea and a lecture. In the evening went to hear Mr. Baxter. Friday, November 2, 1945 Left for London. Had to stand all the way to London. Stayed at the Holmes family. Joyce is home. Saturday, November 3, 1945 Left London by train for Worthing. Stayed with Mr. & Mrs. Walters. It is a very nice day. My Recollections Page 103 Sunday, November 4, 1945 At Worthing. Went to meetings at a Baptist Church. Met Howard. Stayed for the after meeting in the evenings. Monday, November 5, 1945 Left Worthing by train for London for dinner. Left London for Aldershot for supper. No mail. Tuesday, November 6, 1945 On parade in the morning. News of going home on the 12th. Went to Farnham formeetings. Gave my testimony. Wednesday, November 7, 1945 On parade in the morning. Various jobs in the afternoon. Preparing for departure for Canada. Thursday, November 8, 1945 In camp all day. Rested. Attended meetings at Farnham in the evening. Friday, November 9, 1945 In camp all day. No planned duties. Saturday, November 10, 1945 In camp. Attended the campaign in Farnham. Sunday, November 11, 1945 At camp. Preparing for departure. Monday, November 12, 1945 At camp. Ready to leave but waiting. Tuesday, November 13, 1945 At camp. Ready to leave but waiting. Wednesday, November 14, 1945 We are taken to board our ship in the evening. It is a large nice ship. Thursday, November 15, 1945 Our voyage began at 3:00 am, bound for Canada and Home. The ship is large and is filled with military passengers bound for home. Friday, November 16, 1945 Sailed on rough seas. Many of the men are sea sick. Saturday, November 17, 1945 Sailing the Atlantic. The sea is less rough and it is warmer. The Queen Elizabeth (shown here), like the Mauritania, which brought Sam to England, was among 65 fast passenger ships used to transport Canadian soldiers during the war. Both the Queen Elizabeth and Mauritania made six such voyages each. Personal Archives My Recollections Page 104 Sunday, November 18, 1945 Still sailing the Atlantic. It is very calm today. We are feeling a lot better. Filled out telegram forms to be sent home. Monday, November 19, 1945 Arrive at Halifax harbour at 1:00 pm to a wonderful welcome. We disembark at 11:00 pm and immediately board a waiting passenger train. We all have sleeping cars as well as dining units. Tuesday, November 20, 1945 From Halifax, the train sets for the West. Arrived in Montreal where we received Red Cross food packages. Wednesday, November 21, 1945 We travel through Northern Ontario day and night. Thursday, November 22, 1945 We are still on the train. Arrive in Winnipeg in the evening. There was a reception at the train station. We had supper at a restaurant. The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada was a Winnipeg regiment. Now they are home! We transferred trains to many different destinations. Friday, November 23, 1945 I traveled through Roblin then switched trains to travel to Kamsak, then transferred again at Kamsak for a train to Calder, Saskatchewan. My Dad was in town, met some friends in town. Travelled home with team and sleigh. It is very cold. A wonderful welcome by Mother and the brothers. [IMAGES]
