Received mail from Alice Tuesday, May 8, 1945 Maintenance on carrier today. Warm today. Typed letters. No mail today. Wednesday, May 9, 1945 We are on a ceremonial parade. It is very hot. Exchanged money to marks. Typed letters. Received letters from Nick and Harry. Thursday, May 10, 1945 Inspection in the morning. Maintenance and clothing parade. Received a letter from Alice with a photo of Gwen and Alice. Wrote letters. Friday, May 11, 1945 Received a parcel from Bill and Winnie. Wrote letters in the evening. Saturday, May 12, 1945 Moved about five miles to an air field. Stayed at this location for a few days. Received a Bond Receipt from Revenue Canada. Sunday, May 13, 1945 Church parade at 10:00 am. Went to a beach. Played soft ball. Very hot today. Received a letter from home. Monday, May 14, 1945 We are back in Oldenberg. Received a letter from home. Wrote a letter from Alice. We move tomorrow. Tuesday, May 15, 1945 We are on the move to the North Sea. Arrived at Narden at 5:00 pm. Henry ran off the track on his carrier. Wednesday, May 16, 1945 I am on my way for a 72 hour leave in Brussels. It is a ten hour ride on a truck and seven on a train. There are no toilets on the train. We hold each other out an open door to unload. When the train stopped to switch tracks we unload in the ditches. What a day. Thursday, May 17, 1945 We arrive in Brussels around noon. Went for a shower at the Blue swimming pool. Went to bed early. Friday, May 18, 1945 We had our meals at the Dominion Mess Hall. Toured the city. Everything is very expensive. There is little that is of interest to us. Saturday, May 19, 1945 We are in Brussels. Purchased two pair of wooden shoes. Toured the city. Arrived at our base at 10:00 pm. Received a letter from Margaret. Tuesday, May 22, 1945 My duty today is Battalion Runner. Receive a letter from Alice. Wednesday, May 23, 1945 Maintenance of equipment this morning. Battalion sports in the afternoon. Support Company took first prize. Received a letter from Alice. Wrote her a letter. Thursday, May 24, 1945 Battalion Runner all day. Received a letter from Alice. We still are at Norden. We’ll be moving soon. Friday, May 25, 1945 Maintenance of equipment all day. Did some Boxing in the evening. Saturday, May 26, 1945 Battalion Runner all day. Received a letter from Alice. Wrote her a letter. Sunday, May 27, 1945 Church parade this morning. General Crear addresses the men. We move to an area near Emdon. We stay in the peoples homes. Wrote a letter to Alice. Monday, May 28, 1945 Maintenance of equipment in the morning. Went to purchase eggs. Received a letter from Francis. Wrote a letter to Alice. Received a watch from Nick. Tuesday, May 29, 1945 Maintenance in the morning. Regimental first aid parade in the afternoon. I am taking treatment for Infantago. Have had this condition for ten months. Received a letter from the Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen Association. Wednesday, May 30, 1945 On Regimental Aid Parade. Had the experience of being swept downstream in a boat. Received a letter from Alice. Wrote a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Walter. Thursday, May 31, 1945 On kitchen fatigue duty. Went on Regimental Aid Parade. Made donuts and had them for lunch. Wrote a letter to Alice. Alex Swanson has blood poisoning. Friday, June 1, 1945 Maintenance all day. Wrote letters. The men play horse shoes. Saturday, June 2, 1945 Maintenance during the day. Had a lecture on rehabilitation. Wrote letters. Received a letter from Alice. Sunday, June 3, 1945 Went to B. O. R. (?) two times. Am on 24 hour guard duty. Received letters from Mother and Bill and Winnie. Raining. Wrote letters. Thursday, June 7, 1945 Wake at 5:40 to guard duty. Cleaned vehicles for inspection tomorrow. Received parcel from Alice. Watched a ball game. Wrote a letter to Mr. & Mrs. Holmes Friday, June 8, 1945 Lecture in the morning. Colonels inspection in the afternoon. Played ball. Wrote letters to Nick and one to Alice Saturday, June 9, 1945 On kitchen fatigue duty. Received mail from Soldiers and Airmen Christian Association, Alice and Dorothy. Wrote letters to them all. Played horse shoes in the evening. Sunday, June 10, 1945 Today is a day of total Rest. Wrote letters Monday, June 11, 1945 Various duties. Prepare to tomorrows drive. Wrote letters to Nick and Marion and one to Alice. Tuesday, June 12, 1945 We are out on a 100 mile patrol. Arrived back very tired. Received a letter from Margaret. Wrote here a letter. Wednesday, June 13, 1945 On company parade in the morning. Bath parade in the afternoon. Received letters from Mr. & Mrs. Walters. Received a parcel from Alice. Thursday, June 14, 1945 I am on guard duty all day. Am reading the book God Runs My Business that I received from Alice. Wrote letters. It is raining and cold. Friday, June 15, 1945 We had an ordinance inspection. Am on guard duty for 24 hours. Received a birthday card from Alice. We had chicken for supper in the Sergeant Mess Hall. Saturday, June 16, 1945 Am on guard duty. Wrote letters. Did some reading. Sunday, June 17, 1945 We move to Avrich. Received letters from Mr. & Mrs. Holmes and one from Alice. Wrote to the Holmes. Monday, June 18, 1945 Drill in the morning. Education lecture in the afternoon. Maintenance on carriers. Tuesday, June 19, 1945 On patrol to the North Sea. Had trouble with carrier. Received a letter from Margaret. She is still at home. Wednesday, June 20, 1945 Lectures in the morning. Played ball in the afternoon. No mail today. Friday, June 22, 1945 On guard duty all day. There is a storm with the heaviest thunder and lightning that I had ever seen or heard. Saturday, June 23, 1945 We move to Norddeich. My new job is officer clerk. Play volley ball. Went to bed early. Sunday, June 24, 1945 This is a day of rest. Played games and wrote letters. Monday, June 25, 1945 At my new clerking job. Made out nominal roll. Played ball and wrote letters. Tuesday, June 26, 1945 Various jobs all day. Played games, wrote letters. Received a letter from Alice. Wednesday, June 27, 1945 Made out the muster roll. Jackie helped me. Received a letter from Alice. I purchased a watch. Thursday, June 28, 1945 Am in the office all day. I am going on leave in a few days. Now I have seven watches. Wrote letters. Friday, June 29, 1945 Preparing for a leave in England. Received my pay. Went out trading. Purchased one watch. No mail. Saturday, June 30, 1945 We are on our way on leave to England. Had trouble with the truck. Arrived at Nijmegan late. It is raining. Sunday, July 1, 1945 At Nijmegan. Leave for Calais at 4:30 pm. Travel all night on hard seats on a train. Monday, July 2, 1945 Arrive in Calais at 5:00 am. Leave for England at 2:00 pm. Arrive in Dover. I am on my way to Edinburgh, Scotland. Tuesday, July 3, 1945 In Edinburgh I stayed at the Canadian Legion. Walked up the hill to In Edinburgh castle. Took some photos of the hill and the castle. Wednesday, July 4, 1945 At Edinburgh sight seeing during the day in the heart of the city. All the meals were at the Canadian Legion. Thursday, July 5, 1945 This is my last day in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland. Spent most of the day at the park near the Train Station. Departed for London at 10:30 p.m. We are on the train all night. I was able to have a seat in one of the compartments. Friday, July 6, 1945 Arrived in London at 8:30 am. Booked in the Beaver Club. I had my dinner at the Club. Cleaned up a bit before going to visit the Holmes family in east London. My Recollections Page 92 Saturday, July 7, 1945 Spent the night at the Beaver Club, where I had meals as well. Here I met Parks and Abe, part of my gun crew. Attended services at the Kingsway Hall. Went back to the Holmes for a visit. Sunday, July 8, 1945 Went to attend the meetings with the Holmes family at a Gospel Hall in the morning. About five people present. Attended an evening service at St. James Church in East London. Monday, July 9, 1945 Spent most of the day in Central London. Tried to sell some of my wrist watches, but had no luck. Back at the Beaver Club. I am readying a book called "The Restraining Hand". Tuesday, July 10, 1945 (My 23rd Birthday) Took a train to Worthing from the Victoria train station. Was welcomed to stay with the Walter family. It is a rainy day. Went to Goring to hear a preacher named Rev. Banks. Wednesday, July 11, 1945 At the Walters in Worthing. We went for bicycle rides in the country. Took some photos. Watched an open air meeting. Sold some watches to a jeweler. Thursday, July 12, 1945 In Worthing. Went for a walk along the beach overlooking the English Channel. Left for London by train in the afternoon. I stayed at the Beaver Club. Friday, July 13, 1945 Walk in the center of London in the morning. Leave by train for Dover in the evening. Stay at a transit camp in Dover for the night. Saturday, July 14, 1945 We left Dover in the morning sailing across the Channel to Calais, France. I stay in Calais all the rest of the day. We board a train at 1800 hours, hard seats and all, for Nijmegan, Holland. We travel all night. Sunday, July 15, 1945 Arrive at Nijmegan at 6:30 am. Had breakfast at the camp. Traveled by truck to Amersfoort, Holland where the Camerons are stationed. Received lots of mail. Monday, July 16, 1945 On parade and physical training in the morning. Medical Inspection in the afternoon. Went to have a much needed shower. Wrote letters in the evening. Tuesday, July 17, 1945 Physical training in the morning. Worked on maintenance of my carrier. Wrote a letter to Alice. Received a letter from her. George came over for a visit. Wednesday, July 18, 1945 Physical training in the morning. Went to the Regimental Aid post for treatment for my face (infitago). Wrote to Alice. George and I went to visit Axle Swanson. We visited some Dutch people. Thursday, July 19, 1945 Today we turned in our rifles. Purchased a typewriter and a camera. Received letters from Margaret and Alice. Wrote letters to both of them. Went to visit George. Friday, July 20, 1945 Went on a Bath Parade. Wrote letters to the Walters family and Alice. We are preparing for our Generals Inspection. Repaired my carrier. Took photos of a Mass Band. My Recollections Page 93 Saturday, July 21, 1945 I am on kitchen fatigue all day. Went to visit Axle Swanson in the evening. Wrote letters to Margaret and Alice. Sunday, July 22, 1945 Practiced for a drill to take part in a Ceremonial Funeral. Had a picture taken of personnel in the Battalion. Monday, July 23, 1945 On Ceremonial Funeral. Wrote a letter to Alice. No mail today. Tuesday, July 24, 1945 Washed and cleaned carriers today before taking them away to be parked. All units must be turned in on their own power. Wrote a letter to Alice. Attended a prayer meeting at the Salvation Army. Wednesday, July 25, 1945 Went for a shower. Wrote letters. Took the carriers to a demobilization area. My carrier stopped at the entrance and would not start, had to be towed into location. Stayed in, in the evening. Thursday, July 26, 1945 Physical training in the morning. We had a lecture on medals. Watched a ball game in the afternoon. Bought some tulip bulbs and sent them to Alice. Friday, July 27, 1945 I am a Line Orderly today. Wrote letters, sent Alice $10.00. Rained in the afternoon. Had an interview with a Post Service Officer. Saturday, July 28, 1945 Muster parade in the morning. Sent flowers to Annie. Went downtown. Visited Axle Swanson. Sunday, July 29, 1945 Church parade. Wrote letters. Went to Apledorn. Met Allen Dervert. Arrived home late. Monday, July 30, 1945 Physical training in the morning. Watched a ball game in the afternoon. Receive five letters. Sent flowers to Annie. Tuesday, July 31, 1945 Worked in the Quartermaster Stores. Helped make our pay books Number III. No mail today. Wednesday, August 1, 1945 Worked in a shoe shop on repairs. This is my new job. Various in the evening. Thursday, August 2, 1945 Worked in shoe shop today. Went for a walk downtown. Sent flowers to Annie. Friday, August 3, 1945 Worked in the shoe shop. Applied for a welding course. Sent flowers to Mr. & Mrs. Holmes. Saturday, August 4, 1945 Worked in the shoe repair shop. Received a letter from Alice. Wrote letters. My Recollections Page 94 Sunday, August 5, 1945 Stayed in, in the morning. George and I went to Apledorn. to a meeting. Note – the meeting was conducted in Dutch but we could recognize the tune of the hymns. Monday, August 6, 1945 Worked in shoe repair shop today. Practiced on the typewriter. No mail today. Tuesday, August 7, 1945 Worked in the shoe repair shop all day. Practiced on the typewriter. Received a letter from Alice. Warned for a Normandy tour. Wednesday, August 8, 1945 Worked in shoe repair shop all day. Wrote a letter to Mother. No mail today. I earned one pound cutting hair. Thursday, August 9, 1945 Worked in the shoe repair shop all day. Wrote a letter to Pearce. Rained all day. Stayed in camp. Friday, August 10, 1945 Worked in the shoe repair shop all day. Rained all day. No mail today. Went downtown in the evening. Saturday, August 11, 1945 Various duties today. Preparing for a tour of the battlefields. Wrote a letter to Alice. No mail today.
