How did HomeworkMatters come into existence?

I'm glad you asked. This service started, as is natural, with a need. One of my brothers, a highschool math teacher, asked if I, the programmer brother, could put together a simple mechanism for him to post homework assignments for his students. Soon a humble web application took on a life of it own. As others began to see HomeworkMatters in action, interest grew and I began to realize a wider audience of teachers, students, parents, and school administrators could benefit from a simple, affordable homework solution.

There are services and applications of great complexity that aim to put everything online for a school or school district. In the right circumstances, these can be wonderful tools. That said, even with open source (free) software, the downside is the cost in time and money to train/learn how to get value out of large "it does everything" framework systems.

HomeworkMatters is designed to give individual teachers or entire schools a web service that compliments the existing school website (which often has static or stale information). If updating homework assignments is quick and easy (and even fun), then fresh content becomes a natural consequence.
